We are looking for a Senior BackEnd developer (in Barcelona, Serbia, or remote) to optimize our AWS services, boost scalability, and build a strong base for advanced analytics and machine learning, with a possible move to Azure.

At Mercaux, our backend is a collection of cloud-based RESTful API services built on the reliable Java (and a tiny bit of Kotlin) + Spring + Hibernate stack. One standout feature for us is our multi-tenancy approach, where all Mercaux clients coexist within a single infrastructure.

These services play a crucial role in our ETL system and are utilised by our iOS, Android, and Web applications. Check out more details about our architecture here.

From a business perspective, these services handle user authentication, rights management, data storage and retrieval, message forwarding through the Twilio API, integration with OMS, and much more. We're seeking a skilled backend developer who can help scale out our platform's core (e.g., preparing for potential sharding) and drive the development of new business scenarios.

  • Building the foundation for advanced analytics using statistical and machine learning techniques
  • Collaborating closely on optimising memory and CPU utilisation, as well as fine-tuning complex SQL queries

How to know if youโ€™re the right fit:

  • You've worked with similar infrastructure: Linux, PostgreSQL, AWS (SQS, SNS, S3, CloudFront)
  • You possess solid Java skills: Hibernate, Spring, Spring Boot
  • You're well-versed in SQL: optimising complex queries, memory and CPU usage, etc.
  • You're experienced with development tools: CI/CD deployment (Teamcity), bash, gitflow
  • You have familiarity or hands-on experience with: AWS ECS, EC2, ASG, RDS, Lambda, Docker, Load testing (Jmeter)
  • You can effectively communicate in English for work purposes, especially in written form

What we offer:

  • International, diverse, and dynamic team
  • Opportunity to create something new, and to transform the retail industry
  • Learning & Development Allowance (upon probation)
  • Competitive salary & Bonus scheme (subject to performance)
  • Health Insurance (upon probation)
  • Opportunity to participate in the Options scheme (upon probation)
  • Paid time-off + applicable local public holidays

Weโ€™re seeking exceptional engineers with a passion for backend, data, infrastructure, mobile, or security & privacy. While we'll consider your preferences, our engineers are encouraged to move across different areas of the company, and everyone holds the title of software engineer. ย No matter your seniority, you will work on production code, directly improving our products or adding new exceptional features. At the moment, most teams use Python, Typescript, or Java for the backend, and Kotlin and Swift for mobile. Our approach to software development is highly flexible, and we adapt our tech stack to the needs of the different products.

A few examples of your responsibilities

  • Work closely with other software engineers to expand our set of libraries and make our processes ever-more efficient.
  • Learn about the latest and greatest technologies, testing the promising ones to make sure we donโ€™t miss out on game-changing opportunities to boost our productivity and the enjoyment of our work.
  • Constantly improve the quality of our products, tools, or infrastructures by fixing bugs and refactoring the code base where necessary.

What we look for

  • Reasoning ability. Given the necessary knowledge, you can solve complex problems. You think from first principles, and structure your ideas sharply. You resist the influence of biases. You identify and take care of the details that matter.
  • Drive. Youโ€™re extremely ambitious in everything you doโ€”and your initiative, effort, and tenacity match the intensity of your ambition. You feel deeply responsible for your work. You hold yourself to a highโ€”and risingโ€”bar.
  • Team spirit. You give generously and without the expectation of receiving in return. You support the best idea, not your idea. You're always happy to get your hands dirty to help your team. Youโ€™re reliable, honest, and transparent.
  • Proficiency in English. You read, write, and speak proficiently in English.

What we offer

  • Incredibly talented, entrepreneurial teams. Youโ€™ll work in small, result-oriented, autonomous teams alongside some of the brightest people in your field.
  • An exceptional opportunity for growth. We go to great lengths to hire individuals of outstanding potentialโ€”then, our priority is to put them in the ideal position to thrive. Spooners in their 20s lead products worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And if youโ€™ve got what it takes, youโ€™ll soon be playing an essential role in major projects, too.
  • Competitive pay and access to equity in the company. Typically, we offer an individual at the start of their career a salary of โ‚ฌ63,965. If they possess a few years of relevant experience, the salary on offer tends to be between โ‚ฌ105,737 and โ‚ฌ143,330. Pay grows rapidly as you accumulate experience and translate it into greater impact. You can also receive some of your pay in company equity at a discounted price, thus participating in the value creation we achieve together. If relocating to Italy, you may enjoy a 50% tax cut.
  • All. These. Benefits. Flexible hours, remote working, unlimited backing for learning and training, top-of-the-market health insurance, a rich relocation package, generous parental support, and a yearly retreat to a stunning location. We help each Spooner set up the conditions to do their best work.

Before you apply

Bending Spoons is a demanding environment: Weโ€™re extremely ambitious and we ask a lot of ourselves and one another. While this tends to lead to fantastic learning, achievements, and career growth, it also requires a significant commitment. So if you like the role and are ready to give your very best, donโ€™t hesitate to apply.

The selection process

We welcome applications in English and Italian. If you pass our screening, weโ€™ll ask you to take on a few tests that assess how you approach unfamiliar problems. If youโ€™re successful with those, weโ€™ll invite you to a series of interviews.

Send us your CV and a cover letter summarizing your relevant work experience and motivation to join the Readymag team. If your experience matches our requirements, weโ€™ll get back to you and schedule the next step.

It's entirely remote and runs in three stages:

  • A 20-minute call with our HR representative, where youโ€™ll have the opportunity to ask any questions about the job. Weโ€™ll also ask you to fill out a form with a few technical questions that don't require special preparation;
