THE ROLE AND THE TEAM

The ZEOS B2B Portal is the face of our platform, serving as the central gateway for partners to manage their business within the Zalando ecosystem. As the Engineering Manager for the Portal and Portal Application team, you will lead the engineers responsible for building a seamless, high-performance, and intuitive user interface that unifies complex B2B services.

You will manage a cross-functional team of up to 10 engineers, fostering an environment where frontend excellence meets robust backend integration. Your mission is to ensure that the ZEOS Portal remains a best-in-class "Single Point of Entry" for our partners. You will collaborate closely with UX designers, Product Managers, and Principal Engineers to deliver a cohesive experience, ensuring that modularity (Micro Frontends), security, and performance are at the heart of every deployment.

With ZEOS we shape the future of the Zalando logistics ecosystem - please read more HERE.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

  • Lead Full-Stack Strategy: Help shape a scalable and modular portal architecture across both frontend and backend layers. You'll ensure a seamless and intuitive experience for our partners, creating harmony across various applications, services, and internal tools.
  • Empower and Grow Talent: Hire and develop a diverse team of 10 engineers (5 frontend, 5 backend). You will focus on their professional growth, helping them master the balance between rapid feature delivery and high-quality engineering standards across the stack.
  • Bridge Design and Engineering: Work in close partnership with Product and UX Design leads to translation of user needs into technical roadmaps, leveraging modern web trends and Design Systems (DS) to increase development velocity.
  • Own the Portal Infrastructure: Take responsibility for the portal's backend infrastructure and services - overseeing deployments, scalability, uptime, and data flows that power the partner experience, in addition to frontend performance and CI/CD.
  • Champion Operational Health: Take full ownership of the portal's stability, frontend and backend. You will oversee CI/CD pipelines, monitor performance metrics across the stack, and ensure robust security (Okta/OpenID) and SEO-friendly architectures.
  • Navigate Architectural Choices: Provide the technical perspective needed to guide decisions around Micro Frontends (MFE), backend service design, SPA performance, and API architecture, ensuring the team builds extensible solutions without over-engineering.
  • Foster Smooth Delivery: Act as a catalyst for Agile best practices, removing blockers for your team and ensuring that cross-functional stakeholders are aligned on the portal's roadmap and release cycles.

WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

  • Proven People Leader: You bring 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams, with a track record of building healthy, high-trust cultures and coaching senior talent in an international environment.
  • Full-Stack Portal Expert: You have a solid technical background in modern web technologies (React, TypeScript, Node.js) and backend systems (Java/Kotlin services, databases, messaging), with a deep understanding of Micro Frontend architectures, service design, and state management.
  • Platform & Infrastructure Owner: You are well-versed in designing and operating backend services and REST APIs, not just consuming them, and have hands-on experience with cloud-native deployments and infrastructure management (AWS/Kubernetes).
  • Cross-Functional Technical Leader: You've managed mixed frontend/backend teams before and are comfortable making technical trade-offs across the full stack, from UI rendering to backend service architecture.
  • Quality & Operations Focused: You have a strong "DevOps" mentality - you care about build times, automated testing, infrastructure reliability, and seamless deployments, ensuring a zero-downtime experience for our partners.
  • User-Centric Perspective: You understand that technical excellence is a means to an end. You are passionate about delivering value to the customer and can translate business requirements into clean, scalable software products.
  • Empowering Guide:You excel at giving your team the space to lead while offering the right level of support. You know how to balance looking at the "big picture" strategy with staying connected to the technical heart of the work.

Backend Engineer – Core Systems

Department: Tech - Core Systems

Location: Berlin

About the opportunity

Bank Core runs the systems at the heart of N26 - accounts, ledgers, and the core banking logic every other team builds on. We're revamping that core right now, so the engineers who join today shape decisions that reach across the entire company. The problems are real, the domain is deep, and the impact is direct. Our services are written almost exclusively in Kotlin on Spring Boot, deployed on Kubernetes, communicating over Kafka, backed by Postgres, and running on AWS. We lean heavily on agentic coding and expect you to do the same - but you stay in charge. You question what the tools produce, review every line, and own the result. We work with a high degree of autonomy, collaborate closely, and share what we learn. In this role, you will

  • Own features end to end on systems that move real money for millions of customers
  • Go deep on the banking domain - payments, ledgers, and the rules beneath them - and use that understanding to question and sharpen what we build
  • Drive your own priorities within a cross-functional team, and unblock yourself when you hit a wall
  • Raise problems early with a proposed solution, instead of working around them
  • Ship incremental improvements and share your findings - including at our Get Stuff Done Days (GSDD)

What you need to be successful

Skills:
  • Solid grasp of microservice architecture
  • Comfortable with relational databases, Postgres preferred
  • Experience operating in a modern cloud environment, ideally AWS and Kubernetes
  • Full professional proficiency in English
Nice to have:
  • Event-driven systems with Kafka
  • Payments, ledgers, or other banking/fintech domain experience

Who you are

  • Relentlessly curious - you want to learn new domains like payments, ledgers, and banking from the ground up
  • Product-driven - you understand what you're building and push back when it doesn't add up
  • Self-starting - you unblock yourself
  • You surface issues early and bring solutions, never quietly route around them
  • You favor steady, incremental improvement
  • You share knowledge freely and learn from the people around you
  • You write well-tested code and treat security as part of the job, not an afterthought
  • You give and receive open, direct, timely feedback

What’s in it for you

  • Accelerate your career growth by joining one of Europe’s most talked about disruptors 🚀.
  • Employee benefits that range from a competitive personal development budget, work from home budget, discounts to fitness & wellness memberships, language apps and public transportation.
  • As an N26 employee you will have access to a Premium subscription on your personal N26 bank account. As well as subscriptions for friends and family members.
  • Additional day of annual leave for each year of service.
  • A high degree of autonomy and access to cutting edge technologies - all while working with a friendly team of peers of diverse nationalities, experiences, and backgrounds.
  • A relocation package with visa support for those who need it.

Senior Manager, Data Science

What you'll do

  • Own high-impact data science work across product data science and fair play. Create and build novel algorithms, models, and data-powered features that directly shape the chess experience for our users, from systems that protect the integrity of the game to features that make Chess.com more engaging and useful for players at every level.
  • Partner across the company on product vision and execution. Work closely with product managers, engineers, designers, and writers to translate new stats and algorithms into decisions that power our next generation of features.
  • Design and deploy creative heuristics, algorithms, and models that identify cheating at scale using the full depth of your statistical and data science toolkit. Raise the quality and sophistication of our approaches over time.
  • Manage a lean team of data scientists. Turn strategy into clear team objectives and results, not just execute direction from leadership. Set the quality bar through your own work and give feedback that inspires teammates to do great work, not just fix the issues of the day. Help data scientists grow into scientists who can operate with more speed and independence over time.
  • Communicate early and often. In a fully remote culture, proactive communication is how work actually gets done. Surface blockers before they become problems, keep stakeholders informed without being asked, and make sure your team is never left wondering where things stand.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of data science experience, with a demonstrated track record of developing algorithms and models, contributing to features that shipped, and driving real value for users.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills; experience building and working within data pipelines using BigQuery and GCP or similar cloud databases & storage at scale.
  • Comfortable with agentic workflows and tools (Cursor, Claude Code or similar) to accelerate research ideation and execution.
  • Solid machine learning fundamentals with enough depth to contribute meaningfully to models across the chess data stack, including anomaly detection for fair play and features that support learning and understanding chess at varying rating levels.
  • Proven ability to communicate findings clearly to both technical peers and senior non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience managing or meaningfully mentoring other data scientists or analysts.
  • Deep familiarity with chess: you like to play, have thought about rating systems and how inflation may impact ratings at scale, want to build products that you would use yourself to further your chess journey, and have done some thinking on the cheating problem and how to detect it.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience on a consumer gaming or entertainment platform where domain-specific data science is at the core of the product.
  • Comfort working in lean, high-ownership team environments where being proactive is your superpower.
