Who You Are:

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in data analysis or related fields, with a demonstrated progression in responsibility and project diversity; direct experience within the AdTech ecosystem is highly preferred. Proven experience providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior or mid-level data analysts.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Informatics, or a related discipline, preferably with a strong foundation in mathematics.
  • Advanced SQL: Mastery of Window Functions, CTEs, and handling deeply nested JSON/Map types. Expert ability to optimize heavy Trino (Athena) operations for performance and cost-efficiency within Datalake environments handling a daily data volume of 5TB+.
  • Statistical Knowledge: In-depth understanding and application of advanced statistical concepts for modeling and forecasting. Proficient in Python for evaluating A/B tests (Power Analysis, P-values, Bayesian methods).
  • Complex data manipulation: Expertise in Python for complex data transformation, specializing in memory-efficient processing to ensure scalable analytics pipelines and consistent reporting performance under massive daily data volumes.

  • Oversee all aspects of indirect taxation within the company and its subsidiaries, including planning, reporting and compliance.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced Email & SMS Retention Manager to own and optimize our customer lifecycle communications. You'll be responsible for turning first-time buyers into lifelong Afina fans—driving repeat purchases, filter replacements, and brand loyalty through strategic, data-driven email and text campaigns. This is a high-impact role where you'll directly influence revenue, LTV, and the overall customer experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retention Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive email and SMS retention strategy across the full customer lifecycle—from post-purchase onboarding to win-back and re-engagement campaigns.
  • Email Marketing: Plan, build, and optimize email campaigns and automated flows (welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase education, filter replacement reminders, VIP/loyalty, re-engagement, and more) using Klaviyo or a similar ESP.
  • SMS/MMS Marketing: Design and manage text message campaigns and automations that complement email touchpoints, driving timely engagement without over-messaging.
  • Segmentation & Personalization: Build sophisticated audience segments based on purchase behavior, engagement data, product type, and lifecycle stage. Craft personalized messaging that resonates with each segment.
  • A/B Testing & Optimization: Continuously test subject lines, send times, content formats, CTAs, and frequency to maximize open rates, click-through rates, conversions, and revenue per recipient.
  • Content & Creative: Write compelling copy and collaborate with the design team on email/SMS creative. Ensure all communications reflect Afina's brand voice—clean, educational, wellness-forward.
  • Filter Replacement Lifecycle: Own the replenishment reminder strategy, ensuring customers are prompted to reorder replacement filters at the right time to maximize retention and recurring revenue.
  • Analytics & Reporting: Track and report on key retention metrics (repeat purchase rate, LTV, churn rate, revenue attribution by flow/campaign, list health). Use insights to iterate and improve.
  • List Growth & Health: Manage list hygiene, deliverability, compliance (CAN-SPAM, TCPA), and work with the acquisition team on opt-in strategies that build a high-quality subscriber base.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, customer experience, and growth teams to align retention messaging with launches, promotions, and customer feedback.

What We're Looking For

Required
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience managing email and SMS marketing for a DTC or e-commerce brand.
  • Deep expertise with Klaviyo (strongly preferred) or comparable platforms (Attentive, Postscript, Omnisend, etc.).
  • Proven ability to build automated flows and campaigns that drive measurable revenue and retention improvements.

Job Description

What you'll do:

  • Develop new platform capabilities and product offerings from design through release
  • Find the balance between speed to market and long-term growth by designing for the horizon and building for today
  • Partner with Product to define appropriately sized initiatives to construct a roadmap that meets business needs quarter over quarter
  • Preserve customer goodwill by ensuring system availability by participating in on-call rotation, addressing support tickets, and taking action on preventative measures to improve reliability
  • Provide mentorship to engineers on the team and across the organization
  • Play an active role in the continuous improvement of the engineering organization through lunch table discussions, team showcases, and reviews with senior leadership

What you bring:

  • 5+ years of backend software development experience with a strong proficiency in Ruby (preferred), Golang, or JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML, or a related field preferred
  • Solid understanding of Computer Science fundamentals such as relational and non-relational databases, data structures, algorithms, and REST APIs
  • Experience with domain modeling, object design, and system architecture
  • Proven track record of writing clear, tested, and concise code
  • Proficiency to set expectations and inform decisions through project estimates based on the information available
  • Ability to write and review technical proposals, providing constructive feedback and articulating trade-offs
  • Strong sense of ownership across all aspects of the development lifecycle, including incident response and accountability for product robustness

We own market-leading criminal screening coverage across National Criminal searches, Watchlist, Sex Offender Registry, and jurisdictional workflows—including federal, state, county, and municipal levels—with a strong focus on accuracy, fairness, and fast turnaround times.
