About the team

We are growing the Financial Assistant team at Plata, building intelligent systems that support users in managing their finances, understanding spending, and interacting with financial products in a simple and intuitive way. This team plays a key role in improving customer experience, engagement, and the overall value of our core products. This is a customer-facing product in a regulated environment โ€” accuracy, safety, and trust are non-negotiable.

We use AWS, Go, Python and cloud-based models, yet still flexible to mix ready-made tools and ship our custom solutions. We're all about building systems that deliver real, valuable results for our organization.

You will be a key specialist in a cross-functional team, working closely with backend, mobile and other LLM engineers.

Challenges that await you

  • Work with agentic architectures where needed: tool use, multi-step reasoning, orchestration, and failure recovery
  • Design and maintain eval infrastructure (offline test suites, golden datasets, regression harnesses) that gives a reliable signal after every change
  • Work with advanced prompts, set up RAG-oriented data sources for efficient retrieval, and evaluate model outputs to ensure accuracy, relevance, and quality
  • Implement safety and guardrails: hallucination detection, refusal strategies, factual grounding
  • Run online and offline experiments (canary, A/B) to validate that changes improve real user outcomes
  • Own observability from day one: trace LLM calls, monitor quality drift, latency, and cost per session in production
  • Collaborate with backend engineers and product to ship reliable improvements, review code, and maintain production health

What makes you a great fit

  • Strong classical ML fundamentals, you understand what's happening inside models, not just how to call their APIs
  • Strong eval mindset: you design the measurement system before writing the first prompt, and treat evals as a first-class engineering artifact
  • Hands-on experience with search and retrieval: dense/sparse/hybrid, reranking, query understanding โ€” using managed tooling effectively, not necessarily from scratch
  • Practical experience with agentic architectures: tool use, orchestration, failure recovery
  • Safety-first thinking: guardrails, content policies, graceful degradation under uncertainty, especially in a context where wrong answers have real consequences
  • Production ML ownership: observability, latency budgets, cost tracking, regression detection
  • Expertise in Python and its ecosystem, as well as language- and framework-agnostic mindset to achieve project goals
  • Familiarity with open-source tools to build and evaluate RAG applications.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to a broad audience of stakeholders
  • B1 or higher English level for effective communication with an international team

Your bonus skills

  • Previous experience delivering business-critical ML/AI-powered applications for customer-facing products
  • Fine-tuning or distillation of LLMs for production use cases
  • Experience deploying open-source models (Llama, Mistral) in private/on-premise environments
  • Experience in fintech, banking, or regulated domains

About the role

SumUp is looking for a Systems Engineer Manager to join our Corporate IT team. In this role, you will report to the Head of Global IT. You will establish and lead our Systems Engineering function within Corporate IT, establishing the discipline from the ground up. You will own and mature SumUp's identity infrastructure, built on Microsoft Entra ID, and drive the consolidation and standardization of our core business platform configurations.

We are looking for a technical strategic thinker who thrives in bringing structure to complexity. You wonโ€™t just be "keeping the lights on"; you will be actively improving stability, observability, and performance.

About the team

The Corporate IT team currently consists of a diverse group of System Administrators and outsourced support across the EU and the Americas. Our mission is to ensure every SumUp employee can access the tools they need safely and efficiently. We provide the "digital keys" to the company, ensuring that identity and access are seamless enablers of work rather than hurdles.

We believe in high accountability, technical excellence, and fostering a culture where IT is treated as an engineering discipline. If you are excited about building unified identity platforms, leveraging cutting edge technologies like AI and scaling internal engineering in a complex, multi-region fintech environment, we want to hear from you.

What youโ€™ll do

  • Design conditional access policies, manage identity lifecycles, and ensure SSO health across a complex Microsoft Entra ID environment.
  • Develop scripting and workflow tooling to reduce manual toil and increase reliability across the organization.
  • Drive the adoption of AI-powered tooling to automate routine processes and scale the team's output beyond human hours.
  • Partner with Endpoint Management to ensure seamless integration between identity, access, and device management across the fleet.
  • Govern access to AI platforms and tooling (e.g. Copilot, Cursor, Langdock) - permissions, data boundaries, audit trails
  • Lead the consolidation and standardization of core business platform configurations to bring consistency to our fast-growing landscape.
  • Build a team where you will set clear expectations and actively support the career growth of your team members.
  • Partner closely with Security & Compliance for access controls, the People Team for "Joiner-Mover-Leaver" processes, and Engineering teams for secure tool access.
  • Own the IT service queue for systems-level issues, triaging and resolving with engineering rigour rather than a purely reactive support mindset.

You'll be great for this position if:

  • You have 5+ years of experience in IAM or Systems Engineering, with deep expertise in tooling like Azure/Entra ID, Okta, or OneLogin.
  • Familiarity with governing non-human identities and service accounts at scale -- this is increasingly critical as AI tooling proliferates and is a meaningful filter for the right candidate
  • You have a proven track record of automating lifecycle processes (JML) and proficiency in scripting (PowerShell, Bash, or Python).
  • You design systems that solve access problems before they reach the helpdesk and have expert knowledge of cloud-first identity principles like SCIM and OIDC.
  • You have experience acting as a technical lead, managing high-level administrative permissions, and navigating "Least Privilege" environments.
  • You see technical debt and inconsistent configurations as an opportunity to create structure rather than a hurdle to avoid.

Why you should join SumUp:

๐ŸŒ Opportunity to work with SumUppers globally on large-scale fintech products used by millions of businesses worldwide, from our Berlin office. This involves an office-first setup.

๐ŸŒˆ Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Be part of a workplace that values and promotes diversity, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone's perspectives are respected and embraced

About the role

This role will be operating at the intersection of applied research and engineering, building crucial AI capabilities, and owning their robust implementation. You will have direct impact on shaping the models served in our products, and the user experience as well as business value that is driven by them.

What you'll do

  • Post-training, distillation and reinforcement learning
    • Create training environments that elevate the quality ceiling of synthetic data, and provide high-quality reward signals for both off- and on-policy learning.
    • Design model behaviors that optimize for interpretability and an outstanding user experience.
    • Train agentic models that autonomously interact with complex structured and unstructured environments, write and prototype code, and navigate multimodal inputs.
    • Utilize the best tool for the job โ€“ SFT over synthetic data, on-policy distillation, RL or any combination of these to drive down the cost of specialized intelligence.
    • Own benchmarking pipelines โ€“ assemble high-quality datasets and measure impact of different training parameters or methodologies.
  • Engineering Principles
    • AI engineers are engineers โ€“ build production-ready code and own the end-to-end process of data, training, benchmarking and implementation.
    • Architect scalable inference strategies that maximize compute efficiency.
    • Maintain solutions to ensure stable, reliable execution for customers.
    • Closely collaborate with engineering team to design important intersections of AI and product services such as interfaces, inference tracking, checkpointing, data persistence and caching.
    • Contribute to engineering culture; mentor peers, evolve patterns, raise the bar on code quality, testing strategy, and documentation.
  • Tooling & Resources
    • Work with bleeding-edge open-weights models and internal training frameworks.
    • Stay at the forefront of open research and toolingโ€“ rapidly prototype and validate novel approaches.
    • Contribute to internal tooling for inference, training, orchestration, and data generation.
  • Soft Skills & Mindset
    • Communicate ideas and explain solutions โ€“ even to a non-technical audience.
    • Autonomously build demonstrations and showcase work to the wider company.
    • Break down ambiguous problems into a clear technical scope โ€“ think beyond immediate business needs and incorporate future scalability into each design.
    • Proactively collaborate with team members and seek out all resources relevant to the task at hand.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate has all of the following:

  • Strong background in both ML and engineering
  • Great communication skills and rapid understanding of problem descriptions
  • High agency; willing to propose, prototype and own solutions
  • Experience in post-training large models (SFT, distillation, RL)
  • Experience deploying models at production scale
  • Previous work with dockerized systems (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Previous contributions to open research or AI infrastructure
  • Strong familiarity with latest AI research and open-source tooling
  • Experience shipping complex software and owning production-code

Nice to Have

  • Experience performance-engineering inference architecture for maximum throughput (vLLM, SGlang, llama.cpp)
  • Detailed knowledge of RL frameworks (verifiers, ART, prime-rl, trl)
  • Published models or blog posts/publications

Success Indicators

  • Benchmarks and user metrics: Model quality does not just exist in a lab โ€“ both benchmarks and real user metrics are critical to evaluate model quality.
  • Reliability: Minimizing hallucinations, maximizing inference uptime and consistency, ensuring high accuracy in expected model outputs.
  • Interpretability: We do not build black-box AI โ€“ all models must be able to communicate reasoning processes, break down code execution, reference sources and achieve consensus decisions.
  • Impact: Improving internal frameworks and tooling, elevating technical culture, educating teams and sharing learnings.
  • Collaboration: Ownership of projects without micro-management, agency in seeking out and offering help wherever possible.
